Patient Safety Recognized at Gibson Area Hospital

Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services (GAHHS) Director of Patient Safety Adam Elder received recognition for his service as an Advisory Council member of the Midwest Alliance of Patient Safety (MAPS). Dr. Jay Bhatt, Chief Health Officer of the Illinois Hospital Association (IHA) presented the certificate at a recent Advisory Council meeting where Elder was also reappointed to serve a second term on the council which is closely aligned with IHA.

MAPS, a federally funded Patient Safety Organization (PSO), is designed to improve patient safety, ensure quality care, collect and analyze patient safety data, and provide educational and collaborative opportunities to its 63 hospitals and health care organizations they currently serve. “In 2010, a new federal law was enacted specifying that any hospital with 50 beds or more must belong to a PSO,” said Elder. “Even though our hospital does not meet the specified size mandating us to belong to a PSO, our organization’s Administration, Medical Staff, and Quality Committee have been very supportive of our participation in the MAPS PSO since we first joined in 2012. It demonstrates how this hospital is being proactive to help provide the safest possible care to our patients.” Addressing his service on the eight person advisory council, Elder noted, “It is very fulfilling work and gives me a chance to represent other Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) that belong to the PSO."

Elder further explained the organization’s diversity, describing members such as Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, a facility with over 900 beds, and rural hospitals such as Gibson. “The most fulfilling part of being a member of the PSO is collaborating with this wide variety of health care systems. It creates a supportive environment that allows us to focus on system processes like patient safety that are key issues in the healthcare model regardless of facility size. It is the true meaning of health care collaboration.”
