GAHHS CEO Rob Schmitt Named One of Becker’s 50 CEO’s to Know for Third Year in a Row

Mayo. Johns Hopkins. Mount Sinai. Barnes-Jewish. These massive hospitals and health systems are practically household names. That said, many Americans live in small, rural communities and rely on lesser-known hospitals for high-quality healthcare. To honor the leaders behind these remote providers, Becker's Hospital Review has released the 2016 edition of its 50 Rural Hospital CEOs to Know list.

These top presidents and CEOs have demonstrated dedication to providing high-quality, accessible care to their communities. Many of the executives have either received rural healthcare accolades or led their organization to a status worthy of awards and recognition.

For the third year in a row, Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services (GAHHS) CEO, Rob Schmitt has been named among these top 50 CEOs. Of the 50 CEOs selected from hospitals all over the country, Schmitt is the only one to represent our area. The nearest and only other CEO from Illinois selected is from Fairfield, 156 miles south of Gibson City.

Schmitt was named Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GAHHS on April 1, 2007. Under his leadership, GAHHS has grown to become one of the largest Critical Access Hospitals in the Nation. In addition, GAHHS has been recognized at the State and National level for providing high quality care and high patient satisfaction by organizations like: The Joint Commission, Healthgrades, Arbor & Associates, Ivantage, Women’s Choice Award, National Rural Healthcare Association, and CMS. GAHHS is the only CMS Five (5) Star rated Hospital in East Central Illinois. Schmitt also serves on various healthcare Boards, including several Boards for the Illinois Health and Hospital Association. Schmitt most recently was appointed a member of the National Quality Forum’s (NQF) Attribution Multistakeholder Committee for the Attribution: Principles and Approaches Project. Schmitt began his tenure at GAHHS on December 9, 2002 as the Chief Financial Officer.

The Becker's Hospital Review editorial team selected leaders through an editorial review process where a number of factors were considered, including awards received; local, regional and national leadership positions held; and their organizations' recent performance. Nominations were also considered.
