Mary DeWinter, CNA (better known as “The Shower Lady”) in the Annex, was chosen as the Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services (GAHHS) March Employee of the Month.
Mary has worked for GAHHS for 8 years and previously worked at Palos Community Hospital for 18 years. Mary grew up in English, West Virginia located in McDowell County as the daughter of a coal miner. Her dad worked 49-1/2 years in the mines while her mother was home taking care of four children.
Mary enjoys her job for many reasons including the interaction with the residents and their families, especially the time she gets to spends with them on a one-to-one basis to pamper them. She said, “God gave me this job to be of service. The blessings I receive daily just overflow, they are my family.”
When asked why she enjoys working for GAHHS, Mary said that GAHHS is a wonderful hospital. “It provides so much to the community and I am blessed to be part of this great work family.”
Mary currently lives in Sibley, having moved there from Tinley Park. Her husband and best friend, Mike, passed away in 2012. She has a wonderful daughter, Nikki, and a son-in-law, Vince, along with three grandchildren (Vinnie – 13 yrs, Gabby – 9 yrs and Dominic – 6 yrs) who live in Ottawa. Mary likes to read and said that church is a very important part of her life as well as family. She is the assistant music director at church and is also a greeter. Mary loves to sing; performing solos at church, and growing up had a trio with her sisters and later picked up a bass singer.
