GAHHS CEO Rob Schmitt Named One of Becker’s 50 CEOs to Know for the Fifth Year in a Row

Rural hospitals throughout the nation provide much needed access to healthcare that many Americans rely on a daily basis. These rural hospitals don’t have the name recognition as many larger metropolitan hospitals, but they continue to provide high-quality healthcare critical to those living in small or rural communities. To give recognition to these hospital leaders, Becker's Hospital Review has released the 2018 edition of its 50 Rural Hospital CEOs to Know list.

The CEOs featured on the list have overcome significant challenges operating rural community and critical access hospitals to lead sustainable and thriving organizations. Many CEOs have served their institutions for decades, recruiting physicians, expanding services and implementing technology platforms to ensure the best care possible for their communities.

For the fifth year in a row, Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services (GAHHS) CEO, Rob Schmitt has been named among these top 50 CEOs. Of the 50 CEOs selected from hospitals all over the country, Schmitt is again the only one to represent our area. The nearest and only other CEO selected from Illinois is from Fairfield, 156 miles south of Gibson City.

Schmitt joined Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services in 2002 as CFO and was promoted to Chief Executive Officer CEO in 2007. Under his leadership, GAHHS has grown to become one of the largest Critical Access Hospitals in the Nation with over 700 employees and 21 clinics on the hospital campus and in surrounding communities. In addition, GAHHS has been recognized at the State and National levels for providing high quality care and high patient satisfaction by organizations like: The Joint Commission, Healthgrades, Arbor & Associates, Ivantage, Women’s Choice Award, National Rural Healthcare Association, and CMS. Schmitt also serves on various healthcare boards, including the Illinois Hospital Association. Schmitt is also a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a member of the National Quality Forum’s (NQF) Attribution Multistakeholder Committee for the Attribution: Principles and Approaches Project.

Becker's Healthcare accepted nominations for this list and considered leaders making a positive impact on their organizations. The CEOs featured lead hospitals consistently recognized by the National Rural Health Association, American Hospital Association and HIMSS as top institutions; others sit on local chamber of commerce boards and serve state hospital associations.
