Healthgrades Names Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services a 2024

Patient Safety Excellence Award™ Recipient
Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services is among the top 10% in the nation for patient safety

[Gibson City, IL] – March 12, 2024 – Gibson Area Hospital and Health Services (GAHHS) announced today that it has been recognized as a 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ recipient by Healthgrades, the leading resource consumers use to find a hospital or doctor. This achievement, along with GAHHS’s other Healthgrades Award designations, such as; #2 Orthopedic Hospital in the State of Illinois, America's 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Surgery (2024), Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award (2024), Five-Star Recipient for Hip Fracture Treatment for 2 Years in a Row (2023-2024), Five-Star Recipient for Spinal Fusion Surgery (2024) reflects GAHHS’s commitment to delivering safe, high-quality care.

“We are honored to be recognized as a top 10% hospital in the nation for our efforts towards patient safety.  Patient Safety is our number one priority and we work diligently to ensure that all patients have the best possible outcomes.  This award is a testament to the dedicated team of medical professionals at GAHHS that remain focused on patient safety measures, preventing medical harm, every single day.  We are the only hospital in Central Illinois to achieve the Patient Safety Excellence Award, and we could not be more proud.”  Robert Schmitt, CEO

Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates for approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide to determine this year’s top-performing hospitals for patient safety. During the 2020-2022 study period, nearly 170,000 potentially preventable safety events occurred among Medicare patients in U.S. hospitals, with four patient safety indicators accounting for close to 75% of these incidents.* Healthgrades’ analysis revealed that patients treated in hospitals receiving the 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award has a significantly lower chance of experiencing one of the four leading safety indicators than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals:

  • In-hospital falls resulting in fracture (approximately 52% less likely)
  • Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest (approximately 56% less likely)
  • Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital (approximately 67% less likely)
  • Catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital (approximately 71% less likely)

“Gibson Area Hospital has cultivated an outstanding safety culture that prioritizes the well-being of both patients and staff, setting a high standard for patient safety nationwide,” said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer and head of data science at Healthgrades. “We’re proud to recognize GAHHS for providing top-quality care while preventing serious injuries to patients during their hospital stay.”
